Oil level guage

I think my oil level guage is knackered (1995 non-Vario 993)....I sit there the flat, engine on idle and nice a warm for at least 5 minutes and it doesn't move at all from it's lowest position.

Now I know I have oil from the dipstick and oil pressure guage, but from the oil level? Na da.

Are these things easy to fix/common faults? Or should I just ask my indy next time it's it for a service?

What is oil pressure at idle when hot (approx 800 rpm idle)

What is oil pressure at 3 to 4000 rpm when hot

Do you hear oil sloshing around car on initial start up (listen to car on driver's side at bottom of door area)

When was car last serviced with oil and filter change, there are two oil filters on a 993, one in front artea of offside rear wing (the big one) and one on engine underside

Does central warning light come on or stay on

It does sound like gauge failure but may be others issues here

Oil level guage doesn't move at all when idle or revved.

Oil pressure guage is approx. 2/3s way up at idle/hot, at the top (5?) and bouncing down occasionally when around 4000 rpm.

No sloshing sounds. Was apparently all checked when it was serviced (8 weeks ago). I only bought it 8 weeks ago from an Indy so might take it back to them under warranty.

How long have you been running the engine before checking the level ? you will need to drive the car for between 20-30 mins before secondry thermostat opens, then park the car on the flat and check level after about 20-30 seconds of idle, car must be driven to get the 2nd oil loop open, and then must be on the flat,for checking, during this period keep away from gas pedal

It is a fault which has been logged before, but usually 80% of the time it is user error. If you do not get the second thermstat open, and it does take all this time , being driven,and then being perfectly flat, you will not get an accurate reading from the guage or the dipstick.

I reckon when hot you should get 4-5 bar pressure at 3 to 4000 rpm.

I reckon about 2 bar on idle at 800 rpm when hot

If no oil heard moving on cold start up, it's a noise which cannot be easily missed on a 993, for about 30 seconds to 1 minute then I would be concerned and most definitely back to garage where you purchased car

To be clear....oil pressure guage seems to be completely normal....4-5 bar when hot at 3000-4000 rpm. Not heard any oil sounds either.

I don't think it's an oil level issue.

I think it's a oil level -guage- issue. When warm (I drove her to work then parked up and let her idle for 4-5 minutes), and on a level, at idle, the oil level guage just doesn't budge.

I'll take her back under warranty and get her fixed....

(I'm based near Reading so have the indy (Cridfords) to take her back to, or Northway should she need something a little more

I think you need to check your level after 20-30 seconds after reaching level ground , at idle should give a good indication of oil level. I find if you leave it too long after you have parked the oil begins to return to the main tank and you do not get a good reading

I am concerned that you cannot hear oil moving on a cold start up

The oil cooler is at the front of the car on the driver's side, located inside the wheel arch at the front of the arch and the oil pipes run inside the sill area on the driver's side. Hence the gurgling / sloshing noises on start up.

For what it is worth, if it were my car I would be back to Cridfords if they gave a warranty and that was where you purchased it.

Ray Northway has a good reputation but I doubt if he could do any work on the car under any warranty unless the warranty provider gave prior agreement.

No doubt some legal eagle will be along soon to advise diffferently!
