Boxster s tyres

I need to put a set of tyres on my 2001 boxster s
It has 205 50 zr17 front, 255 40 zr17 rear.
Can anybody advise which tyres to fit for gdneral road use ?

My Boxster was on the optional 18" wheels & came on Pirelli PZeros (N rated). I swapped them for Michelin Pilot Sport 2s (N rated) & the difference was light & day. Much better control & steering. Someone else drove it & couldn't believe the difference.

Bridgestones work well on the 17's

I think they were S02 on my stepdad's car N rated
Better than the continentals that were on it, his is a very different feel on the narrower 17s than mine on the 18's

I run my boxster with 18 inch wheels on Bridgestone RE050 N rated. They're really good. I think if I was buying today and wasn't concerned about cost, I'd go for Michelins. I don't think the grip levels would be significantly better, but I think they give a smoother and slightly quieter ride.
I got the Bridgestones through Black Circles, (good price and fitting).

I run the same sizes almost on my 968, (225/45/17) and I'm a real cheapskate.

I bought a set of GT-Radial Champiro HPY (£255fitted) they are so good for the money, grippy and quiet in all conditions, so when my A4 quattro came up for tyres I put a set on that as well, quieter than the P7's that came off and no difference in grip as far as I can tell, mind you I'm not sure I want to find the limit on the quattro the grip is just emense

Michelin PS3's replaced the Bridgestone SO2's on my 986.
Much better tyre in my opinion.

Another vote for Michilen Pilot Sports here. Had 3 different makes of tyres on the Boxster so far with the Michilens being the best. Ran a set of Dunlop Sportmax TTs for 12 months that came on a set of wheels I bought which were good but the Pilot Sports feel grippier & perform better in the wet. When I bought the car it had a set of Primewell ditch finder special tyres on the rear with one being brand new & the other having a few thousand miles on it lets just say driving in the wet was exciting!! I soon changed those going for Pilot Sports as thats what was on the front.

How old were the tyres that came off? A fresh set of tyres over 5 year old + items will almost always make a massive difference. A friend's newly acquired E46 328i is lethal in the wet ; it's on 10 year old budgets on the rear! I mean that the car will oversteer easily! My Stag was no different but I was far too tight to buy another set of tyres which the next owner did, reporting an unsurprising difference in grip.

On 944s (which ran 17s), Mondeos and M3 here is what I have tried:

Kumho = Not a bad tyre, but not the best for outright grip. Reasonably Priced
Michelin PS2 = Great tyres. Grips very hard wet and dry. They also last an age (read 16,000 miles on a 300BHP 944 and still being legal) Be careful in cold conditions though!
Michelin PS3s = Not quite as good but a very grippy tyre all over nonetheless
PS4s = As good as the PS2s IMO but they work everywhere better (grippy in all conditions bar frosty roads!) ; they are quiet too
Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics = I've had both the 2s and 3s. These are superb all round and I almost bought a set for the M3. They last a while too.
Falken FK452s = Front of the M3. They are fine. Better than the Kumhos but IMO not quite as good as the Michelins. Life of them tends to be an issue.
Falken FK453s = These are a great value grippy tyre. But if you are doing more than 5,000 miles year I'd swallow your pride and get the Michelins ; these things just don't last at all. A good tyre choice for a low mileage car. On a frequently used car these will not be cheap in the long run.
