986 s oil in coolant.
Hi All.Need some advice re my 2001 986 S. Have found large amount of oil in the coolant twice in the last few months which is a bit worrying to say the least. Have flushed the system twice now and had the head gasket checked by a Porsche main dealer who found no problem with it.I had alread replaced the oil cooler and they found no problem with that either. It had been overheating months before and Porsche found it to be a collapsed oil filter. Replaced oil pumps at the same time. Car is not overheating anymore and there is no loss of power or misfiring.Porsche however tell me it could be an internal crack in the cylinder head, although theyre not certain and say the engine needs to be stripped down to investigate and would like to charge me £2000 for doing so. Is it worth it or would it be better to cut my losses and sell it for spares or repair as ive already paid out for a new clutch, tyres, refurbed wheels, front discs and pads, front suspension mounts etc. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

It would be good to know where you're based to direct you next. But you need to get it to a Porsche specialist who will diagnose it properly. In the south I'd suggest Ray Northway, Autofarm, Jon Mitchell. In the North it would be Hartech & probably a few others.

AUtofarm would be my choice from where you are. Possibly RPM who now have new premises.buster wrote:Thanks Jim. Im based in Herts. Will certainly look at Porsche specialists in the area.

I read somewhere about problems with the oil separators on these, could this be the problem ?

Re: 986 s oil in coolant.
Thanks for the reply.Thats what i thought, the first time it happened so flushed the system and replaced the oil seperator. Ok for 3 months but problem then returned.Flushed system again but problem returned within a few weeks. Its possible the seperator was faulty but as it was a Porsche part i would hope that was unlikely. The car is still running fine but i will have to get it to a Porsche specialist as i dont fancy it blowing up on me.I will try one more thorough flush first as the system does hold 22 litres and it may be that there is oil trapped in the rads still.More in hope than anything else.

Despite what your garage have told you, I wouldn't be too quick to rule out the head gasket...
What test did they do? If it was simply a compression test, it wouldn't necessarily show a breach between the oil and water ways...
