Cayman advice please

Post by Tallguy »

Having failed to find a suitable 911, I've been looking at Caymans. Have seen a couple of interesting ones at dealers who would take my 968 as a trade in. Should I be looking at the smaller or larger engine model? Any known problems with engines / gear boxes? Models I have looked at have between 40-80K on the clock, big histories (one was complete OPC from new) and 05-08 plates. Any extras that should be considered essentials to look for?

This si the sort of thing I've been looking at;

with some others a bit cheaper.

Comments & Advice anyone please?

They don't seem to be much trouble, especially the manual ones

The tiptronic ones are fine, as long as you service the transmission every 4 years or 40,000 miles at most (Contrary to the service schedule)

Price does not look bad either.
Clean it, wax it, love it, ENJOY it... then fix it

Thanks, this is another one I've been looking at;

http://www.vcars.co.uk/used-cars/cardet ... dna&u=9855

Mileage is higher (ex lease car according to the dealer) but has full OPC history and only 1 owner.

I think??? And I'm admitting that I think? You need to look at the same things as the early 996 and Boxster engine issues. RMS and IMS. Also the radiators and A/C condensers are at the front and only last about 7/8 years, so they might need doing? Clutch, tyres, break pads and discs, coil packs, compression and suspension all need looked at before buying. :D

Would have thought most of the well discussed engine issues that prevailed in the early '96's and bogsters have been well and truly sorted by the time the Cayman came into production, don't know about any of the other issues , but I expect if one uses the normal Porsche buying criteria , should be safe :)

I think the Gen 1 Cayman had engine issues, but I'm not sure? One for Jon really, or Baz Hart if he still comes here? A bore scope will let you know if there are scores, and a compression test should let you know if the bore is oval? So, Jon, do you know if the Cayman suffered any similar issues to the original production water cooled engines?

I personally like the look of the Cayman, and from what people have told me they're great to drive, but I've never driven one. There is a bit more space in the cabin than I thought there would be, and more luggage space than my 911. I think getting the right one would make it a great experience, as I'm sure they're a great car. :D

I agree again with Lee, some engine issues with both gen 1 and 2 Boxster and Cayman engines, check on Pistonheads altho' like football fans it just takes a couple to give them a bad name !
