2007 - 997 - Turbo

Had the car now for 5 months and covered 1500 miles

It takes a bit of getting used to but I’m getting there. As you’d expect it’s very different to the 964 I had previously, there’s so much torque and it’s fantastically quick with loads of feedback, really loving it.

One of the things I’m not pleased about is the amount of tyre roar, not at low speeds but when at 70 plus, it’s difficult to have a conversation in the car.

The car is fitted with new tyres as it came out of the dealers, Bridgestone Potenza RE 050A all round, N-0 rated, 305/30ZR19 (102Y) on the rear and 235/35ZR19 (87Y) to the front.

The tyre pressures are set as per the values stated on the B post of the car.

I realise that the aspect ratio of the tyres is low but was thinking that would give you a stiffer ride, but not really, the 964 was a harder ride, so Porsche have done a good job on the suspension to counteract that.

I’ve talked with the supplying dealer who I feel has fobbed me off by saying ‘ it’s a sports car’

Is this a characteristic of this tyre? Or of this car?

The 997 and indeed the Turbo does suffer with road noise, and just so not to fob you off- it is indeed a sports car... running 305 rear tyres!
The Bridgestones do have a firmer sidewall than some of the other makes which can give a bit more rumble, however I know of an owner who sold the car as it was too noisy on motorway drives No mention of fun drives...

I have the same tyres on my Turbo and to be fair I find it acceptable, considering what I'm driving.
No is not an S class and my van had less noise from the road....
There is some mention of that you can Geo some of the noise out of the car, the 997 is very open to Geo tweeks...

Done some research on the Rennlist discussion forums to find that the guys in North America are changing to Bridgstones to reduce the tyre roar and hence the noise levels in the car, so I think the tyres as fitted are probably my best choice.

Think I'll investigate, as you suggested, looking at what I'd need to do on the car's suspension geometry as the negative camber on the rear could be reduced by a few minutes but would need to understand to what degree that would change the car's driving characteristics.
