Running lumpy

Hello all, wondering if anyone can help? I run my Boxster (986) petrol tank a bit too low a few nights ago and as it was showing 10 miles on the dash it started to cough and splutter a bit, so I immediately stuck £60.00 worth of fuel in and it hasn't been running right since i.e a delay at 3000 revs when I stamp on the loud pedal and then a kick up the arse when it seems to catch up.
It does seem to be improving slightly on it's own but I was wondering if it is something that will self correct or should I put some sort of additive in the fuel and if so what would you recommend? Alternatively have I f#cked it right up and am facing untold garage bills ahead?

You might have dragged some crap from the tank through. The fuel filter should have stopped it going any further, so I would change that first.

Thanks for the reply Lee, that's what I suspected. Is it easy enough to get to on a Boxster and is it easy enough to change?
P.S any other ideas are always welcome. Thanks.

I've never had the pleasure of working on a Boxster, so I'm not sure? Try down loading the manual and seeing if it gives you a clue. Let me know how you get on?

dependant on age of boxster the fuel filter is under the vehicle in the tunnel just in front of the engine upto 2001 my cars after that in the fuel tank is the strainer to stop pump picking rubbish up..

so ideally it needs to be on a ramp to change it if its a 2001 my or before

Thanks for all the replies everyone. The alarm started acting the goat again last night going off for fun whether the car was locked or not just as me and the wife were about to go out for the first time in ages (we've got a 9 month old daughter) I'd picked my mum up who was keeping an eye on Isabelle and just as we got out of the car at our house it started kicking off . After 45 minutes of trying everything I gave up and ran mam back home . I then picked up a bottle of wine for the mrs and just 8 cans of Scrumpy Jack for myself and then persuaded the Station Officer of my local Fire Station to let me keep it in their engine house over night as I quite like my neighbours.
Picked it up today and got on the motorway heading for my in-laws in Ramsbottom and it was running lumpy again (see post "Running lumpy") and at one point cut out, Finally got into Ramsbottom and the engine management light came on so thought I'd give Chris Sanderson a ring at Loe Bank Motors as I was in the area and he honestly couldn’t have been any nicer telling me to drop it off there and he’ll look at it when he gets a chance.
Here’s hoping I haven’t drowned the box of tricks under the passenger carpet as it was very wet.
