how is everyone? my name is neil.i have a few questions to ask you aircooled owners.ive started to look at these cars now with alot more interest in buying one.i currently own an escort cosworth and am looking to sell up and get a 911.ive always loved them since i was a boy and feel now is probaly the time.ideally i would like a 930 but as i have to pay for a wedding that may have to wait for a few years so have started looking at the 3.2 supersport.and some of the standard body 3.2's.
questions are along the lines of, what are they like to live with?i know they are old but that doesnt bother me tbh as its a weekend and dry day car for me. what are they like for reliability, servicing and repair costs and parts availibilty?any usual problems they get i should look for?
Hi Neil, I've only owned by '89 Carrera 3.2 for 18 months. I took my time in searching and wasn't put off by a 146,000 mile example that had clearly been very well looked after with all the servicing stamps and invoices for work, a Peter Morgan inspection undertaken by the previous owner and an Autostrasse inspection from myself. So far, touch wood, the only non-routine item has been rear shocks but I know I have a few items coming up if I want to keep the car for a few years such as gearbox synchros, engine mountings and suspension - all part of the fun of a 20 year old sportscar. You won't regret making the step to an air-cooled 911.
cheers for the replies guys. im taking a step down in the power stakes to be honest but i have always wanted an old skool 80's 911. the cosworth aint exactly a cheap car to run and is 17 years old too so has the usual issues of old cars.the 911 will be dry use only and only on days off and weekends.
if i can afford a fairly good turbo i will go that route but a nice 3.2(preferably widebody) will make do till i can get a turbo.
just not sure what running costs are on these cars and i will have to find places to source parts.
autostrasse is only 20 min from me i think.do they supply parts and service?
