Porsche have built some electric Boxsters

Post by poprock »

News just came through from Porsche’s press department this morning: They have built three fully electric Boxsters for on-road testing.

Releasing this info to the public is a definite statement of intent from Porsche—they’re seriously working on an all-electric sports car for some point in the future, as well as the various hybrid drive systems they have already developed for different specific uses.

From Michael Macht, Porsche CEO: “We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future. But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche.”

So there you go. There will be a fully electric Porsche, one day. It will not be a Cayenne, or Panamera—it will be a sports car.

From what I can gather, the Stuttgart regional government have been giving out substantial grants to fund the development of sustainable technologies. Porsche’s bid for some of that money was to develop some all-electric test mules. Details of all the public funding is freely available, so Porsche would have been found out anyway. Best to get in there first with a press release, hence the public announcement on these Boxsters.
