Is the 911 3.2 Targa 'really' a nice drive , good/bad car ?

Post by Mas »

Yes I know I should be hanging around the 944 section.
( shhhh dont tell anyone im here) BUT , I keep looking at 911 3.2 's and seeing G50 boxed ones around 87 or 88 I'd like to buy.

What amazes me is how often you read " enthusiasts will only buy a coupe or cab "
or " a targa will fetch slightly less " well that suits me because I only like the Targa and i dot follow the pack anyway. Yes it could leak, but on the other hand best of both worlds has always sprung to my mind and I wonder have you owned a Targa and was the roof really that bad ? Hve you owned a 944 Turbo and a 911 3.2 how does the drive compare exactly.

Cheers Mas

They are a classic shape.
Find a member with one and ask for a drive.
If you like it then it does not matter what anyone else thinks.

Hello,

I bought a 911 about 4 years ago. I spent months looking and reading about which cars to buy and also read that nobody wants Targas and was sucked into that way of thinking. Anyway I looked at over 30 cars and ended up getting a 87 3.2 Targa!

Well in my opinion its a great car. Engine and handling are fantastic, roof off motoring in the summer is great, so great I dont tend to take the bike out anymore.

I also have an 83 944 and a 79 924 and comparing the 911 to the 944 its like chalk and cheese, the 944 is easy to drive fast, never ever scary and because of this its really enjoyable. The 911 requires your total attention to drive fast, you need to concentrate to get the best out of it and to me it always feels like its going to beat you up and amd ;eave you at the side of the road, if that makes sense? For those reasons its also great fun.

I dont get into the whole 911, 944 arguements, they are bath fantastic cars for different reasons, and Targas are a just as good as coupes. :-)

Out of interest what sort of money are the 911's you are looking at?

Cheers

Gordon I assuem that question is for the other chap but no I havn't driven an sc either
Just to be clear I'm not one of these 'one is better than the other' folk , I only ask as a point of conversation and because I genuinely find other folks car experiences and opinions interesting.
I'd rather know how you all feel re your Porsche 911/944 than talk about football or some other pointless drivel ( yes I hate footie) , does that make sense  or am I weird hehehehe.

To be Honest from what folk keep saying I think I am indeed more of a 944 man in that respect , I dont want the car to feel like it may bite me but I suspect the modern 996 etc may be a bit more dare I say civilised ?

no it was a question for you, have you driven a 911 at all? I think the 996 onward may be too civilised for me tbh. we will arrange a duckstop and you can try the sc!

what does that smurf thing mean then?

I had a 944 s which I killed thats why we ended up with the sc, the sc we rescued from a garden where it was festering. different drives totally tbh, the 944 was user friendly and I would have driven it anywhere anytime. the sc is fantastic but feels rawer and more to be driven than the 944. none of which is a criticism of either. if I could have had both I would, the 944 made me smile just as much as the sc does. Oddly enough more people recognise the sc as a porsche than ever did the 944. I could get mrs and kids and a weeks shopping in the 944, I spose I could do that in the sc but what a rigmarole to do it. I could travel long distances in either but I think the 944 would have made the more comfy cruiser over longer distances. It had a more creature comfort feel to it, the sc, which many would regard as bloated, lardy, loose, an attempt to make more of a "world 911" for the upper end of the market, particularly in comparison to the 3,0 carerra which came before it, still has a more sport car feel to it than I got from the 944. Perhaps this is the lack of power steeering which to my untutored hands makes the road feel a lot closer, on that subject the 944 had mnore of an enclosed feeling to the cabin in the sense of comfort and new(modern) carness.admittedly the SC is an 81 car and the 944 was an 86 car and time does move on, five years of car development is a lot of change. Having never driven an 86 3.2 carerra I cant comment on that direct comparison but someone here must be able to.

another odity is the 944 wqas d199 JUE

the sc is JUL 51w

seem to have a "cars that could be owned by Julie" fixation !!!

The smurf is just conveying my happy seal of approval to the idea but in a seasonally cold wooly hatted sort of way I think. He just seems to suit the moment as my slightly cold fingers tap a reply , hold on this is turning in to a Mills & Boon post here :bigsmurf:

Hi Mas,
I do own a targa (although it's the 964, not the 3.2 you are after, but same shape).

Pros:
--distinctive shape
--** more** headroom at the back
--built-in roll bar makes it safer than a convertible if you roll it (but try not to)
--roof much steadier/more solid than the convertible
--roof folds and fits into the boot for easy storage
--lovely feeling when you motor in the summer with the roof off

Cons
--more noisy than the coupe (after 75/80 mph it really makes a noise)
--yes, it may leak - mine lets some drops at the front sides, but only when I am stationery - it's ok when the car moves, as the water "flows" backwards; in fact the faster I drive, the more waterproof it gets :-)
--after 15-20 years it needs maintenance - recovering (again, I had mine done last year for £350+VAT, see http://forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5430)

The drive is the same as any other 911 of similar type, I do not believe there is any difference - all the engine suspension etc. are the same.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste.
