Hi all, just wondering wether or not an early boxster will still depreciate? The reason I ask is I recently went to pick up a part for my 944 and the guy who breaks them owns a 98 Boxster. After walking round it several times and grinning at him he then threw me the keys and said "take her for a spin!" Needles to say I did and was more than impressed (thanks Mike) So now I am wondering if I bought an early boxster would the price still drop because I have seen them for as little as £6000! Now I don't know what you think but I think that is a lot of nice car for not a lot of money. I have an 88 944S and know if I look after it it will hold it's price and maybe even gain a little. Is this the case with the boxster or are they gonna get any cheaper?
P.S I should point out that I still love the 44 and this is just a curiousity question, I think?
You can pick up a Boxster for somewhat less than £6k but not sure I would want to. They are a lot of car for the money and possibly prices are at rock bottom. There are not that many ’88 944S models around so you are fairly safe however there are far too many Boxsters around so prices could still go down
If I was buying a Boxster I think I’d look at spending a bit more, maybe £10kish. At the end of the day though, Boxsters just don’t put that smile on your face like the older cars and I’d spend my money on a very late 944S2

Did I mention it also has can can red leather seats I phoned Porsche GB and asked was it standard and was told it was an option but an expensive one so hardly anyone chose it so virtually unheard of
Sorry about that little rant but I'm really proud of that car!
My issue with the Boxster vs say a 944 is that a 944 is easy to work on whereas working on a Boxster is far from it. The Boxster was designed for being maintained on a ramp & would be very difficult on your drive on a set of axle stands.
This will make an older one a more expensive proposition than a 944 or similar.

My neighbour's silver '97 Boxster depreciated into a brand new BMW 135 Coupe. The Boxster was not nice to look at (a poor example), the BMW is even worse.
Pound for pound I think the 944 is a better car than the Boxster. The 944 is an everyday useable supercar, a great looking hatchback coupe, almost four seats, economical for what you get, relatively cheap to run, not too difficult to maintain, and if you use it regularly it hardly causes you any problems.
I'd rather wait until the Cayman becomes affordable rather than buy a Boxster now (not that I'd ever have a Boxster).
Keep your 944S.

i love my '88 944S too, and you're right there can't be that many left as of the 13000 made around 9000 went to USA, so about 4000 for ROW, unfortunately mine has no optional extras, it even has leatherette seats

i had my first porsche 944 s2 1989 model for 6 years other than normal maintenance did not cost me a penny extra great drive and whent like a bat out of hell if you pushed it and plenty of room for luggage and shopping using boot and rear seats folded down very practical car.
but i have no garrage and it got battered by the weather year in year out in the end rust got the better of it but this was due to a bad repair after an accident and it had done 136k but the engine was still brilliant no smoke very little oil used ,to put this car back to good as new was between 5-6k so i had a look at was available in the market and i fancied a soft top after lots of reading up on porsche and other makes around i decided on a boxster with limited funds set by her indoors i purchased a 1998 tiptronic boxster i have now had this car for 18 months and am delighted with it i have almost the same space luggage wise with the two boots full leather interior aircon satnav multi cd and a hardtop for the winter its more agile than the 944 and takes on a whole persona with the hood down i enjoy driving it as much as the 944,only gripe cant see a thing in regard to mechanics but small price to pay for the pleasure, which is best neither its what puts a smile on your face when you jump in and disappear into the distance at a legal speed of course ,depreciation is all in the mind a cars value is what you put on it

Boxsters will continue to go south a bit more I think.....maybe the "S" will stabilize, but standards will continue to fade in value. And I agree that they are not nearly as "user" friendly to work on.
Parts are more expensive and you cannot improve on the HP numbers very much without investing alot of $$$$$$$. Not to mention they have some inherent problematic design issues of their own....
the times for the boxster 0-60 etc are higher than the 944s2 but its what you want from a car that counts i have had my days of tearing around but still enjoy a spirited drive when its safe to do so,i picked the boxster for a change and to see how it performed overall using the s2 as a benchmark! time will tell if i stick with it or change again may be a 968 this time or if my pension fund recovers a gt3!!! but i wont hold my breath
We had a Boxster in the fleet & I managed to borrow it. It was a tidy car & was maintained by Hartech. But my 944. Not an S2 could paste it. The car had no torque. Sure once up to 50 it was fine but it took an age to get going. Lack of back seats it a problem for me too. Looked ok with the roof down though.

Is this true, Will my 1988 944S beat a 1998 boxster from 0-60?
