986 and 19" wheels

Post by Paul Hale »

Can anyone help solve a problem? I have a set of new-style turbo replica wheels (19") fitted with new Michelin Pilot Sport (a good choice I thought). I've had these wheels and tyres balanced twice at Kwikfit and twice at NTS, and there is still a wobble at the steering wheel after about 65 mph. My local Porsche dealer tells me that 19" wheels should not be fitted to a 986 (OK on a 987). Is he right ? The wheel bearings etc. are fine - the car has only done 20,000 and was perfect with a set of 18" Carrera wheels.

I've been back to the supplier, who claims that he has supplied these 19" wheels and tyres for other 986's without problems, but will change them as a gesture of goodwill to a set of 18"

Is the dealer right?

19" wheels will accentuate any slight movement in the suspension but if it is around 65MPH it could be wheel balance. It might be worth having a word with an independent specialist to see if they can find any slack in the suspension.
How many weights of what weight does it have on each wheel?
I know Porsche do not recommend 19" on the 986 & your insurance company may have an issue with that.

Hi :)

If that 65 mph problem goes away at say 70 or 75 mph..its a balance problem which may be caused by a slightly bucked wheel/or bad balancing....they SHOULD find it when TRYING to balance that wheel...but it depends how good they are, and IMHO ...Quikfit are rubbish....

I would try and see if they will balance somewhere else....

All the best Brett :)
