'89 3.2 turns but won't start

Post by slategreyjames »

My 1989 3.2 has an issue starting and I am wondering if anyone can help.
Back in November the car developed a lumpy start problem – sounded like it was firing off only a couple of cylinders – but after a couple of minutes running it would sort itself out and be fine all day. But when i left it a week it would do the same thing. I sent it to the bodyshop over christmas and got it back a few weeks ago – started fine, but last week it did the same two cylinder start but this time gave up the ghost.
I replaced the DME relay, distributor cap and rotor arm (which could have done with being replaced anyway) but this has not helped – it tries to start on two/three cylinders with a couple of pops in between. Does anyone have any ideas? it is very frustrating especially with the lovely weather we have been having.
many thanks

It could be the cold start valve sticking , i know thats a common problem with 3.2 LT

When it was starting before did it smoke when it eventually started? You don't mention plug leads which could be knackered & lead a hard life on flat 6's. Cold start valve could be a problem, but ignition would be my first check as A. it's more likely & B. easier to fault find.

The car did have a quick puff of smoke at start-up but would clear very quickly. I have ordered new ignition leads and we'll see what happens with those.
many thanks for the replies so far

Sorted. Drove the car in today! The problem was one of the Ignition leads, most probebly the one from the coil to the distributor cap, I am not sure which as I replaced them all at the same time befroe starting the car. Thanks for all your replies. James
