Cayman 987 engine oil question

Post by Steelback »

I have been looking at various forums with ref the right oil to use on my Cayman. Am I right in thinking that on a higher mileage car 5w/40 oil is the right option as opposed to the recommended 0w/40 ?

Nothing wrong with 5w40 at all in your engine. Mine has a rebuilt Hartech engine with just under 40k on it and I use 5w40 Shell Helix. It doesn't drip any oil or use any.

After doing a huge amount of research on this I ended up running my 986S Boxster on 5W/50 in Fact Comma Motorsport.
It was quieter & certainly ran better on the heavier oil. It also has more Zinc than the Mobil1 OPC use.
If you look at the Hartech site then Barry Hart who has done a shedload of indepth research will only warrant his rebuilds run on Milller Nanotech 10W/50NT http://www.hartech.org/rebuild-terms
If you look at some of the USA bore score & IMS failure research then oil weight or the lack of it figures in some of the failures.

PS I now run the Cayenne on the same Comma Motorsport as well.

+1 for the Comma Motorsport 5W 50 oil & used it in my 986 for the last 3 years with no issues. You can usually find it at around £40 for the required 10 litres too.

5w30/40 is supposed to help with the so called IMS problems
Which applies to 986 and early 987 models

Changing oil regularly also helps

I use shell helix
