1976 911SC Targa Engine Removal

Just a quick question, is it recommended to remove the engine with the transmission or split them prior to dropping the engine? Thanks in advance.

I've only ever removed the engine and transmission once so not an expert, but when I put it back in I intend to keep them together and would certainly remove them together next time.
When removing I ended up with the engine tilted at an angle to the gearbox but still slightly attached so now I'm worried I may have bent the shaft.

It's unlikely that you have bent the input shaft as they are pretty thick. I have taken the engine out and left the transmission but it all happened a bit quick on final release. I will put back as a whole I think. You live and learn.

I have taken the engine out twice on its own without any issues.
I don't see much point taking the gearbox unless you need too.
