986- completely flat battery

Post by mike smith »

My 986 has a completely discharged battery as I've been out of uk for 2 months (let down by a neighbour!!) Can't open anything and therefore can't get to battery.
Please can anyone advise me ? Many thanks

If you use the key in the door lock to get into the cabin then pop the fuse box cover & you will see a red plastic cap covering a terminal that you need to connect a 12 volt supply too (you can earth directly onto the door catch on the B pillar as per pic below & power wise a jump start pack or another 12 volt battery thats charged). This should give you power to press the boot switch & open it giving you access to the battery. If this fails theres an emergency release cable hidden under the front off side wheel arch liner.

If its possible might be worth leaving one of the conditioner type battery chargers connected next time your away?

Many thanks for this. I use a conditioner but I thought a once a week warm-up would do the trick.Sadly my neighbour forgot!
Your advice is very much appreciated!

Hi Mike not sure what battery charger you are using but most of the conditioner tyoe ones only charge at a very low amperage (trickle charge) so if your neighbours turning it on for a day a week its not enough. They are designed to be left connected & will only go into charge mode when it detects a drop in voltage.

Just a quick update for general information. When I took the fuse cover off, no red-button! Called local Porsche dealership who were unable to help.
However, stoic work by an AA Patrolman called Dan, using a trusty bit of wire pulled the release cable from underneath and bingo!
Not sure why this 986 doesn't have the magic red button, but just my luck!! Still sorted now and thanks Chris for the advice.
