Exhaust rattle on the overrun

Post by honeymonster »

Just got my wheel/ handling issues all sorted and my Boxster has now given me a new project to work on! I hear a rattling sound like stones in a tin can when I ease off the throttle.

It doesn't do it when free-wheeling so I don't think its something loose (like the heatshield), or am I wrong to assume that?

Could it be a lose baffle within the exhaust? Is this easy to repair or will it cost me a fortune?

Thanks!

Could be a heat shield there is one above each cat & the welds break. Really needs to be on a ramp or a good jack to check. Maybe time for a noisier fruity exhaust upgrade

+1 on heat shields both of my rear ones have rattled loose in the 2 years I have had the car & are now hanging up in the garage as surplus to requirements. Get the rear of car up in the air on some ramps or trolley jack etc & have a look with engine running you will soon spot the offending item. Mine had almost completley come away from exhaust so a quick tug & they were off & rattle cured. I haven't noticed any extra heat in the boot & the car hasn't self combusted/burst into flames in the 2 years the heat sheilds haven't been on so as I said surplus to requirements......the choice is yours though......budget no object then new sportier exhaust is the next step :D
