Misfire Coilpacks?

Post by Rob996 »

Hi All,
My car is due in the garage due to a misfire (garage suggested coil packs as first quick guess of what it could be)

If it is just 1 that has failed should I get all replaced or just the 1 and is this an engine in/out job?

Is there anywhere on the forum (or members area) that has a summary of the estimate of man hours for jobs and if they are engine in/out? may help if there is a DIY scale - apologies if this already exists?

6 coil packs are around £150 and a mornings work if you have a ramp? An all day Saturday if it's your first time and don't have a ramp. Pretty basic DIY job and quite a few you tube instruction videos if your feeling brave. :D

Misfires commonly coilpacks especially if it is worse in damp conditions.

DIY job I reckon, bit fiddly for a couple of them but perfectly do-able if you're OK with spanners.

lucky for me this is a warranty job :-) so spanners not required (yet)

should all the packs be changed at the same time?

Not necessarily but likely the others will be on their way out soon. It tends to be the ones adjacent the exhaust boxes that go first.

Like all things the same age and have had the same amount of use, they will probably all go around the same time.

I had a client ask why I changed one light bulb in an office and the next week loads went out? They didn't understand that they were all fitted at the same time and used the same amount do were all at their end of life.
