Problem finally solved with the help of JMH Automotive in Holmes Chapel.
It seems that it was a combination of faulty TDC sensor and heavily worn distributor cap and rotor.
I can thoroughly recommend JMH to anyone in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire areas - very easy access from the M6 and a good train journey via Manchester or Crewe if you have to leave your car with them.
