I've just read that this would be a good (cheap) time to get a low temp thermostat fitted for a tiny bit more power, reliability and protection from bore scoring (that sounds familiar). Reckon it's a no-brainer?

yup good idea low temp stat is around £44 from Carparts4less. As for the water pump it looks like the pulley has fallen off! It could be a tensioner laying there.
I run a heavier oil than OPCs use as I still think it is protection against bore scoring & IMS failure.

Forgot to say that when checking the oil level again at home today (stone cold on the flat) I got a new reading - over Max! Totally different from yesterday. So, it looks like no oil loss afterall and some kind of electronic glitch. Hurrah.

Re the oil level reading; my 997 oil gauge is very very sensitive and often reads between two and three segments different during the course of a day of stopping and starting.

I tend to take most notice of it starting from cold in the garage at home - that's my 'datum point'. If you're at the side of the road worrying that it has dumped a load of oil, have a look under the car...

That's happened twice on our subaru (also flat 6) and once on my 996 that's why I suggested it.

Glad it's relatively simple mate.

With regard to the oil, I'd always check in the same location, same conditions to be sure of accuracy. They can be way off between readings if parked on a slope/heavy camber across the car.

Cheers Paul. Flatbed booked to take her to Ray's on Tues - new water pump (might opt. for low temp therm. too). Only arse pain is 3 bloody trains to pick up her when done (plus flatbed cost). Hopefully warranty'll cover the rest. Anyway, could've been worst (though my fingers are still crossed).

Good news!

Hope your nuts and flange feel a little less rusty now.
