Boxster 3.2S gear box problems

Post by sirion »

Does anyone know a good independent in the Leicestershire area who has experience with Boxster gearbox re-builds.

A friend has a 2005 987 3.2S with a 6 speed manual box and its lost 2nd gear. He's spoken with a specialist down in Cornwall who he was really impressed with on the phone but Cornwalls a long way to go :( . This guy seemed to think it may be the selector fork as he had sorted similar problems on another car.

Also the OPC have told my friend that the gear box is a sealed unit and separate parts are not available, is this correct? My copy of PET only goes as far as the 986 but it shows all the individual parts available for that inc gears and selector forks etc, so surely it must be the same with the 987? If not he may have to find a second hand box first.

If you want to PM me the vin number, I'll look on PET for you? People like Baz Hart and JMG would be worth a PM on here too. They must be able to strip one of those in their sleep.

I've used PH for spares before, don't know why I didn't think of them myself

Will also give him Hartec's details so he can contact them if needed. If he's still struggling to find the parts I will take you up on your offer and get his vin from him.

Thanks for your help Guys

Hi
I would just like to say that if Chis at GCR can do the work for you then take it to him. I have just had a full engine transplant on my 3.2 s boxster and the service i got from beginning to end was fantastic and this guy loves his porsches, his work is perfect.
This is where my car will only be going for servicing etc.

This thread is well over a year old, but the car still has not been sorted. Everyone he has spoken to or taken the car to says the same thing, its a new gearbox, as Porsche are still not supplying spares separately

That would be my recommendation as well, get a used one and enjoy the car.

At the same time, parts availability is dependent on what is needed and he will not know that until the box is in pieces..

I suspect the real problem is that few specialists can rebuild them, Porsche do not train their main dealer technicians in the UK to rebuild one, and a proper rebuild rather than a "patch up job" on a Porsche transmission is seriously time consuming and will often cost in excess of £3k to do properly.
Clean it, wax it, love it, ENJOY it... then fix it
