I used him as you can see from the forum

I also need to tell you he is always very very busy, that's the problem with small businesses who people rate as bl**dy good.

Where is the clutch fluid reservoir?

Assuming rhd the it's the small whitish pot on the lh side of the engine bay bulkhead, just above the brake pedal.

I called Martin this morning and he's going to get back with a quote for a new clutch but said around £600 - £700. I'm going to get it towed over to him on Saturday....... might have to push car up the street and call the RAC for a free lift!!!

Hopefully it's not the clutch and maybe something less pocket damaging.....

just a thought

check the price Martin gives you to see if VAT inclusive or not.

He often gives prices without VAT since he deals with a high level of trade people and they never seem to "quote" VAT inclusive

Also he is a no compromise mechanic, he will not do a "quickie" because of maintaining his reputation. He never advertises other than on the Shirley's web site and word of mouth. If he does it, he does it, and that's it.

He's quoted £650 plus vat ( if it is the clutch and it doesn't need other bits ). It's booked in for Saturday and he'll need it for a week.

Teething problems quite common with a fresh '44 until you get caught up with the maintenance. If it still goes into first maybe its somthing else. Get it over the pit & fingers crossed it's not so bad! Hang in there! Been there before you

I could be way of the mark here but........

Being determined not to let things get the better of me i got in the car this evening when i got home and did the following

1. Without engine started i dipped the clutch and found every gear no problem.
2. Engine started and could still find every gear no problem
3. Reversed the car without any judder or anything
4. Put car in first with handbrake on and started to rev and lift clutch and it didn't slip and behaved how i'd expect a car to if you did this.

Now i could be way off the mark but surely if it was a clutch problem i wouldn't be able to do this?????? Or would I??

I'm thinking along the lines of

1. Maybe it's shift linkage as when the car is under pressure it then has difficulty finding the gears?
2. Or maybe a cylinder problem?
3. Maybe a fluid issue? The fluid hasn't been changed since 04 and maybe it's contaminated or maybe air has got in the system!!!! Am i right in saying that it's the same fluid as the brake fluid?

Or can a clutch deteriorate whilst in use i.e it's warm?

Where is the clutch inspection hole located?

If it was a cylinder issue I would have thought the pedal would feel very different.
Is there any fluid in the footwell around the pedals?

The fluid does need changing but it's unlikely to be causing the issue. I would have thought you'd get a slow deterioration if fluid had degraded to such a point not a sudden failure.

It needs to go in for inspection and hopefully it's less serious.

These things happen unfortunately, whatever you buy there will be unexpected maintenance issues even with cars with full service historys.

Hang in there, when she's flying again you'll be saying it was worth it.

Had to see Martin this morning about paying for my MOT and a couple of minor issues with my car.

Mentioned your car and the more you say the more it seems like a linkage issue or a shaft issue to me

Martin is also feeling it could also be as issue linked to the box as well from what you described to him, but does need to see it

my advice would be to leave it alone.

friend of mine had problems with a boxster and kept trying to diagnose it and in the end the engine went

salutory lesson here

yet another job for Martin

suggest you get fluid changed as well as 4 years is a long time without a change irrespective of mileage

The car is being taken over to Martin on Saturday morning as I'm not about to start messing around with something i don't fully understand.....

I will change the fluid though as your right 4yrs is a long time.
