964 cabriolet - roof will not open

Post by sr21581 »

Today for some reason the roof will not open any more on my LHD 91 964 cabriolet. When pressing the switch, the left side "lock" opens but the right one just whirrs a bit and nothing happens ( i.e. the motor itself appear fine but will not "unlock"). Tried "re-closing" but again nothing seemed to happen. Following the instructions in the handbook, I used a screw-driver to try to unlock it but that didn't help either - and now the warning light stays on the whole time........
Has anyone had similar experiences and if so, how did you fix it? Be nice to get it open again soon - the sun is coming for a few days here in Munich.......

Back again - managed to work it out myself in the end....
There are two motors built into the front frame of the roof to activate the locking devices. I removed the cover, unscrewed the four bolt holding the motor in place and removed the whole motor after disconnecting from the cable.
Opening the "gear box" part of the motor I was surprised to see that some of the teeth of the drive wheel were broken off - obviously the cause for all of the problems.
Seems that there are two solutions to this - either purchase a new cog and replace or rotate the existing one with respect to the cam which activates the micro-switch ( indicates end positions of the lock) and try it out.
I'll try the second option first and, if that doesn't work, then the first.....
Greetings

Sorted - option 2 worked - loosened the fixing screw, rotated the cam by approx. 1 tooth and now it works again!
For my peace of mind though I will still order a replacement and keep it in the car, along with a few tools, just in case it happens again.
Now time to drive it home - and the sun is even shining!
