I'd change both unless you've scoped them & found which one is dead.

Got a spark? Is it in the right place? Remove plugs bake in a warm oven or replace with new & try again.
Get a tin of easy start, & get someone to blast it down the intake whilst someone else turns the key.

So assuming to works the same as the 944 (similar era) then one side of the coil should be at a good 12V, try connecting a bulb to it & ground. The other should switch to earth to trigger the ignition, if the sensors are OK then it sounds like the ECU. Have you scoped the sensors to check you have a trigger? BBAReMan or ECU doctor can check the ECU if needed.

Not sure, I think this era run very similar management to 944s. But I think the earlier cars run electronic ignition via a separate module & mechanical ignition. Then they ran DME 944 type system, in which case the ignition/coil drivers are internal.
