Temp indicator failure

Post by graham964 »

First of all hi to everybody on the forum I am a new member having joined the Bristol tipec club. My car is a 2004 996 C4S tiptronic which is beautiful but giving me a few issues (minor I think) which I am trying to sort out.

The temperature gauge on my instrument cluster intermittently fails, the red light comes on and a message on the dash "temperature indicator failure" comes up. When it is working it reads as a max about 60 deg C.
I think there are two problems the intermittent failure and the low reading, the low reading is I suspect the vacuum pipe not opening the coolant control valve to the tiptronic box which is overcooling the engine as a consequence the intermittent is something else which I don't have an answer for at the moment.

Thus far I have replaced the temp sensor, thermostat (low temp hartech fitted), checked out the coolant valve to the tiptronic and solenoid both fine, replaced the top hose which was chafing on the engine mount with a 997 version, part drained the coolant system and refilled/bled the system.

Has anybody else had similar problems or advice ads to what to do?

Cheers

Graham

When we see this it is often either the temp sender connector having dirty/loose pins, or the instrument cluster needing a repair or replacement.

We have about one 996 or Boxster cluster a month we need to have repaired.
Clean it, wax it, love it, ENJOY it... then fix it

Thanks Jon

I will clean up the contacts first and if no joy I guess I will be removing the cluster. Do you have any recommendations? I have used BBA reman in the past who were good.

Hi jmgarage/ Jon

I have the same issue on a 997 C2, and have read quite a few people with the same issue. I had the sensor replaced yesterday and it all worked perfectly for about 20miles then went again back to red light flashing on water temperature and failure indicator coming up on the cluster.

thanks

Paul
