A bit of a late reply but here goes, topic was covered earlier here....
http://forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16513
You will find anything around a 100000 is going to have tired suspension (broken front springs are common). Coil packs are common failure but easy to do & not expensive if your half decent with a spanner set. Bodywork is generally good other thsn stone chips to front but thats down to shape of car. Check roof is raising/lowering properly (check its seating in rails above doors too) It seems with any cheap Boxster (around £5000) you need to kmeep a £1000 or so aside from your budget to allow for any problems......

Re: old cheap boxster
There's plenty out there,
So my advice is go look at a few to get a feel for what's available.
Don't rush into it, there's good ones available.
We paid £6k for a 2002 2.7 with 83k miles from a small dealer. Not too much history in terms of receipts but fully stamped up from dealers and specialists
A few bumps that were removed by a dent guy at the Beaulieu show for under £100
Other than that the only thing that has failed was a crankshaft sensor.
We also had the full M030 suspension kit fitted but that was mostly choice due to age, just £750 for the parts
Feels like a new car now
Both Northways who did the suspension and Porsche Byfleet who fitted sensor both gave it a clean bill of health and said it was a good example.

Re: old cheap boxster
Found one 2000 w plate,S,138k,with new brakes,coffin arms & few suspension bits.
Bad points ( I've noticed so far, haven't got it yet)passenger window is slow &noisy, cracked rear bumper, needs a couple of tyres & only one key.
Got it for £3600,pretty happy with the price, will have to see if it's a bargain or lemon when I've spent a bit of time with it.

Re: old cheap boxster
What colour, any pics.
All the faults you have listed should be (fingers crossed) easy to fix with some lube on window workings, get the bumper plastic welded/painted or find another 2nd hand one in the right colour & keys are just shy of £200 from OPC (don't know whether one of the key loss insurance things for a tenner would cover you? Need to look as I only have one set too). Tyre wise well how long have you got LOL
Happy motoring

Re: old cheap boxster
Great stuff & it most certainly doesn't look like a £3500 car sat there!! Boxsters becoming affordable was one of the reasons I bought mine
. Had to look twice to spot the crack in rear bumper you mentioned too.
Don't forget if its not raining the roof should be down

Re: old cheap boxster
Ended up sorting the window with a new mechanism when the old ones cable snapped, checked the motor without connecting the airbag so got a dash light on now & cracked the rear screen, other than that all going well, using it most days & enjoying it!
Thinking to upgrade the exhaust at some point, anyone recommend a brand?

If you are attending Beaulieu and the airbag light is still on, I'm happy to hook up the i960 and attempt to extinguish it.
Think the Carnewal modified exhausts get the least moan about droning. And seem to breath easier.
Or most indy's will modify the stock unit to give PSE levels of noise if that's the aim again drone free as it's the stock exhaust.
I know Revolution Porsche were doing a group buy 986 exhaust modification for £200+VAT if they got 5 takers.
