Hi.. Not to throw the Cat amongst the Pigeons but.. Is insurance/warranty invalid if the tyres aren't on the Porsche Approved list?

I've just got all Four Corners re-shoed with Michelin Pilot Sports because I was under this impression? Not that I mind, they're great tyres..

Warranty if it is a Porsche one is dependent on N rating. Insurance is NOT. Providing the sizes, speed rating is correct then your insurance co. don't care about the N rating.

Dear all,
i had finally made up my mind up on the tyre front, & opted for the Falken 453's 225 18 40 on the front & 295 18 30 on the rears. I called a local Falken stockist in Birmingham & he has suggested as the rear's are slightly bigger than the standard & my car is 4 wheel drive, there may be problem ??

Please, if there is anyone on this forum that has a 996 Carrera 4 that could confirm or deny that there may be a problem me using these tyres at this particular size, please let me know. My car has just saled through the MOT but with 4 adviseries on the tyres, as they are on the markers, soi want to change them sooner rather than later.

Any comments / help will be greatly appreciated

Personnaly I wouldn't chance it. I covered my 996 Turbo tyre choice in my thread on the subject. I don't know if it will cause an issue, but you do have options for tyres if you don't have your heart set on Falkens.

I'm not sure how sensitive the 4wd system is - but the difference in diameters of 295 / 225 combination is less than 0.5% (808rpm for the rears & 804rpm for the fronts ref an online tyre size calculator).
Reverting the rear tyre width back to the standard 285/30 actually makes the difference larger - increasing the difference to 1.4% (front tyres larger diameter than rears).
Because the viscous centre diff senses difference in speeds between the front & rear axles to vary the torque to the front axle (increased speed difference = more torque to front), I'd think at worse that the rear tyres being increased to 295 would reduce the torque to the front wheels by a very small amount.
It might also cause the PSM to cut in slightly earlier on the rears in adverse conditions as they would be taking slightly more torque than by design.

The 996 Turbo & GT2 I think have different tyre sizes again. If the 4wd / PSM systems are the same it would suggest the system can live with a few % difference in frt & rear diameters without a problem.

However, I think you'd want to be pretty certain before committing......!

Hi All,
I have now had a reply from Falken to assure me there will be no problem fitting the 295's on the rears, so after ive had the wheels stripped & re - powder coated ( any ideas on what colour silver Porsche use on their wheels ? ) I will have the new tyres fitted.

To be honest ive fannied around for so long now trying to choose a full set of tyre's for what i think is a reasonable price ( £530.00 ) that i cant wait to get it sorted now + i suppose it might be an idea to burn off whats left on the old tyres --- never really done that before, but it sounds like a good way of releasing some pent up aggression ha,ha

Once sorted i will let you know what the tyres are like & if ive dropped an exremely large boll--k

It'll be fine on the Falkens. Give 'em a mile or two to scrub in and enjoy! We have a member with a GT3 who uses them on that car on track days and doesn't complain. Be reet, as they say in Wigan.

I still think 295's are pushing it on the 10'' rims & hope they dont belly out in the middle of the tyre causing premature wear ?? I think the higher performance 996 models have a slightly wider rim to allow for 295's

Unless you are watching every penny, I don't think any premature wear will be an issue worth calculating. Falkens come at very friendly prices any way. Enjoy !

Dear all,
i've finally had all four wheels shotblasted & re powder coated ------ so good as new now ! oh & i ve just had the Falken FK453 tyres put on all round, however with all the crap weather ive hardly had chance to bed them in yet, but first opinion is that they are definately quieter than the Pirelli / Michellins that came off.

I'm thinking at the moment that they are a great deal for £530 all round, but will obviously reserve judgment until i've done a few miles on them.

I will put a few pictures on of them once ive sussed out how to upload them,

Just recently bought my first porsche - C4S 996. It came wearing Falken FK453s on the front and FK452s on the back. Bought it from a dealer so don't know the story, but I suspect the different spec tyres front to back are because Falken don't do a single model tyre that fits all 4 corners on this car. My tyres I believe are the original / official size i.e. 225/40 r18 on the front and 295/30 r18 on the back.

Seem like good tyres.
